Recap

,,,,,,The undefeated Unicorns took on the undefeated Krakens in the first game of the night in what was billed as the match-up of the week.

Both teams had differing ideas on when the game was supposed to start. Unicorns goalie Taylor Newton arrived moments before the game was set to start. Meanwhile, Krakens goalie Chad Miller showed up to the rink around noon. Both goalies were ready around the same time.

The game started with heavy defense as both teams spent time trying to figure the other out. It took nearly 5 minutes before Nick McMahon of the Krakens solved Newton and scored the first goal of the game. “Wayne (Garrick) last week, me this week,” said McMahon. “I got into his crack from last week, and I’m feeling good!”

“Nobody tell Nick that’s not crack,” whispered Garrick. “That was just some leftover pixie stix dust that’s been in my bag since ’94.”

The Krakens were on a high with a 1-0 lead, but that didn’t last long. The Unicorns clawed their way back into the game a grueling 2 minutes later as Brian van Vlymen buried a nice feed from defenseman David Foss. “The game is coming back to me,” Foss said. “Defense is usually played behind the other team’s net, right?”

The Unicorns would pick up two more, one from Marc Redinger and the other from van Vlymen with the period ending 3-1 in favor of the Unicorns.

That’s when the game would shift. Unicorns resident leprechaun, Robert Robles, finally arrived and skated his first shift of the season. He showed no signs of rust as he instantly became the loudest person out there. Robles would spend most of the 2nd period buzzing around with seemingly no direction.

The second period played out much like the first. With the Unicorns readjusting their lines as they had to jettison sub Corey Huffman for Robles, there was some figuring out to be done. At one point, both Unicorns defensemen, Mike Mallery and Foss, were out on the same line; however, that’s the line that started the scoring for the period. A long dump in by Mallery reached Foss where he had about 3 shots before finally netting a goal on a nice wraparound.

Robles would actually net his first halfway through the period. Said McMahon, “I think he got into Wayne’s crack, too!”

Feeling a little frustrated with how the night went, Unicorns forward Phil Heichel turned it on in garbage time by picking up 2 goals within the last two minutes to finish this one at 7-1.

“It’s not garbage time. It’s Phil time,” beamed Heichel.

The Unicorns took this game by a final of 7-1 and now sit alone at the top of the standings.

Stars of the Game

1st Star
Foss, David
David had another monster night picking up his first goal and assist of the season while providing solid defense in his own end.
2nd Star
Newton, Taylor
Taylor had only one blemish on this game, and we can’t really fault him for it. As seen in the picture above, there were no friendly yellow shirts around.
3rd Star
McMahon, Nicholas
Got into Wayne’s “crack” and notched the only goal for the Krakens.
