Recap

The second game of the night saw the winless Los Chupacabras take on the winless Demogorgons. This was an emotional game for Demogorgons captain Andrew Minerd as he vowed to pick up at least one victory this season.

“Last year it was an attendance problem,” explained a jaded Minerd. “This year, it’s also an attendance problem. More so that everyone is showing up.”

The opening minutes were very even, but an early penalty on the Chupas swayed this game quickly. Weekly sub Chris Read picked up two minutes for hooking early on to send the Demogorgons on the power play. Adam Winemiller and Minerd connected quickly to put the Gorgons on top early.

“I hope Lopez got that goal on his GoPro,” clammered Winemiller. “I want to put that on my personal highlight real.”

The period would be spent mostly in the Chupas end as goalie Anthony Smith was getting shellacked and the Gorgons were pressing hard to get Minerd his first win. “Did we not get a skater back after that first goal?” asked Smith.

Goals by Brian Gray, Marley Ros, and James Neely had the Gorgons up 4-0 at the end of the first. Things were looking up for the Gorgons.

In between periods, Chupas captain David Lopez was looking for answers, but “Hockey for Dummies” was too long of a read in between periods.

The second period was more Gorgons hemming in the Chupas. Goals by Minerd, Ros, and Neely had the Gorgons up 7-0 wit just over 3 minutes to play.  “You know, I take back what I said earlier,” explained Minerd.  “I’m ok if this team shows up.”

All eyes turned to Gorgons goalie Felipe Rodriguez as he was hanging on to a rarely seen shutout.

The Chupas, not wanting to be the first team shutout, pressured hard for that goal. Into the last minute, the pressure was on. The Chupas were barely getting shots on net, and the Gorgons were playing solid D for their goalie.

Then it happened…

A faceoff win for the Chupas.

An attempted shot. Blocked. Puck found by Chupas forward Evan Cumpston.

Cumpston throws the puck out front were Peter Guevara was standing all alone.

Guevara takes the shot. He fluffs it.

Rodriguez is screened and hunkers down.

The puck eludes everyone and everything… traveling so slow.

Rodriguez never sees it cross the line.

Final score. 7-1 Gorgons.
