The first few minutes saw several chances for both teams, but neither could cash in. It took a slick move by the Unicorns resident troll, Robert Robles, to open the scoring 4 minutes into the game. According to Robles, (Chupas goalie Tony Smith) didn’t pay the “troll toll.”
Unicorns defenseman David Foss slipped a nifty backhander past Smith two minutes later and the Unicorns looked like they were going to start rolling again.
The Chupas dug in and played some solid defense until Evan Cumpston was able to cash in with his first of the night to cut the lead in half.
Brian van Vlymen of the Unicorns would answer back a few minutes later to reestablish the 2-goal lead. “I think I have his rookie card somewhere,” claimed Unicorns goalie Taylor Newton. “Do you think he would sign it for me?”
Despite being down by only 2, the Chupas were still very much in the game until the unthinkable happened. Unicorns captain Mike Mallery picked up a goal on a nice give-and-go play with Marc Redinger to extend the lead. To make matters worse, Mallery netted his second right off a face-off minutes later. Talk about demoralizing…
Mallery’s second goal would end the scoring for the second as the Unicorns were leading 5-1.
Between periods, Smith could be heard berating his team. “Guys! If I wanted to be whipped this bad, I would have stayed home and worn my gimp mask.” That’s the kind of motivational speech that is missing from most teams. Though it wouldn’t change the outcome, it did light a small fire under the Chupas for the second.
A late addition to the game (after much begging and pleading… on his knees… it was disgraceful), Unicorns sub Chris Read netted an early goal in the second despite the stipulation that he could play only if he never took a shot. Read said, “I’ve played with them for two weeks. They should have known better.”
Chupas defenseman John Smith turned in his best Captain Hook impression by getting a little dirty with his stick in the second, but it went unnoticed by the ref. A nameless defenseman on the Unicorns has a large “JS” carved into his side. We wonder where that came from.
Robles and van Vlymen picked up 3 more to the Chupas two goals from Cumpston and Peter Guevara to end this game in favor of the Unicorns, 9-3.
Approximately three minutes after the final whistle, Chupas captain David Lopez shouted, “Are you guys ready to do that hockey?”
