With the expansion draft finishing up right before the puck drop, each team found itself with 7 skaters. After a couple of sub upgrades, the Gorgons and Unicorns were set to skate 4-on-4 for the first time this summer.
If you were looking for a defensive battle, this was the game. The Unicorns came into the game with the fewest goals against while the Gorgons had only given up 3 over the previous 2 games.
The game did start off defensive as both teams were adjusting to the 4-on-4 format. “There’s no room out here,” complained Brian Gray of the Gorgons. “It’s like every time I touch the puck, someone is there to take it from me. I just want to know why that someone isn’t from the other team.”
This game went deep into the first before the scoring drought was broken as
That lead wouldn’t last too long as the Demogorgons cut the lead in half with a nice backhand chip from James Neely using his trusty pitching wedge. “That’s why that club gets the special fuzzy hat,” quipped Neely.
The period ended with the Unicorns hanging on to a slim 1-goal lead. “I think I might be regretting suggesting 4-on-4,” said Unicorns captain, Mike Mallery. “This barely feels like a lead.”
The Gorgons started the second period off with a quick snipe from the darkest corners of the rink to even the game up. “I don’t know who scored that,” said ref David Lopez. “That corner is too dark. Or I wasn’t paying attention. Whichever. I don’t care.”
The game would remain tied for quite some time before Redinger decided he wanted to play. Over the course of 4+ minutes, Redinger racked up 3 more goals to bring his total to 4 on the night. All of them were apparently unassisted. “Someone should cover that guy,” commented Gorgons defenseman Adam Winemiller as he watched on Facebook Live.
The rest of the game was mostly uneventful and would end with the Uni-Redingers on top 5-2.
