It took a little doing, some subbing, and some screeching/crying/whining, but this game between the Krakens and Los Chupacabras would also be played 4-on-4.
With both teams sporting their new roster members, there was a lot of optimism to be found all around. “Since Corey (Calandra) is on this team, I don’t want things to get confusing,” newly minted Kraken Corey Huffman said before the game. “You can just call me Skeeter!”
With the new format, a few skaters needed some time to adjust. Chupas defenseman Justin Griffin was often finding himself deep behind the Kraken’s goal line. “Nothing new,” said Chupas captain David Lopez. “He’s like a lost puppy. He got out of his yard, but he’ll find his way home. He always does.”
This game started off quick as Chris Read netted his first goal for his official team, the Chupas. “Do all my other stats still count since I played for this team like a hundred times already?” asked Read. No. They do not. We’re making an example out of you.
The Krakens would answer back a few minutes later a goal by one of the Kraken Subs to tie the game at 1.
Late into the first is when the flood gates started to open. The Krakens took the lead on another Sub goal followed up by Read’s second on the night to tie it up. A minute later, the Chupas reclaimed the lead on a nice move by Evan Cumpston only for the team to relinquish the lead on a David Hastings goal near the end of the period.
The game would remain tied at the end of the first, 3-3.
Krakens captain Nicholas McMahon ripped into his team between periods. “You guys are letting Read just walk around you! He calls himself ‘Fat Whit Guy’! Someone stop him!”
That little pep talk picked up the Krakens as they shut down the offensive juggernaut Read for the period. In fact, both offenses were shut down for much of the period. It took over ten minutes for the next goal to be scored, and once again, it opened the flood gates.
Hastings would pick up his second to put the Krakens up 4-3. That would be followed by a nice slapper from Chupas defenseman John Smith to knot the game back up a minute later. Hastings, having none of that, put the Krakens back on top 30 seconds later. With less than 3 minutes remaining, it looked like the Chupas were going to remain winless.
Chupas resident “seen but not heard” forward, Peter Guevara, would find himself open in front of the Krakens net and whipped a shot past Kraken’s goalie Chad Miller to tie the game up with 91 seconds remaining.
The last 90 seconds was a little dull as both teams played for the single point and set up the league’s first overtime game.
Overtime was fast and tense as we moved back to 3-on-3. Both teams had a couple of quality chances before John Smith of the Chupas tied the puck up along with a Kraken’s skater along the boards. The puck would pop out to Read who took two strides and blasted a shot past Miller to end the game in favor of the Chupas, 6-5.
“All I wanted was one win this season,” said Chupas goalie Tony Smith. “Oh! And a Hostess Ho-Ho.”
