08/04/2019 – Summer Season Starts

The SARHL’s summer season is set to commence at 7:30 tonight to much fanfare. It’s taken some time to get here, but we are here. Things are going to look very different for this season as there are a few rule changes and some new and exciting teams.

Rule Changes

  • Standard format has changed to 3v3.
  • Game is still running clock but we are playing two 15-minute halves.
  • Goalies are allowed one 1-minute time-out per period if they need a minute break. This does not count towards team time-outs.
  • Concurrent penalties will not drop any team below two skaters. Rather than a second penalty subtracting a second player, the non-offending team will receive a 4th skater. If all penalties expire, play will continue 4v4 until the next whistle at which point play will resume as 3v3.
  • In the event of a tie at the end of regulation, play will resume as 2v2 for 3 minutes. Penalties add skaters to the non-offending team up to a maximum of 4 skaters.
  • Penalties in overtime are 1 minute in length. If a penalty carries over from the 3rd period, the time to serve in overtime is either the remaining time or 1 minute, whichever is shorter.
  • If there is no winner at the end of overtime, the game ends in a draw.

These new rules are set for the summer to allow us to get some competitive games in while protecting the players from the heat.

Please arrive early and be ready to start on time. We will be racing the sun. We do have the lights, but sunlight is the better option. The first week, we have scheduled games at 7:30 and 8:30. El Chupacabra and Krakens, please be ready to start at 7:30. Demogorgons and Unicorns, please arrive as early as possible and be ready to go. If we have both teams ready to go, we can get on and going as soon as the first game ends.

Also, we asked last season and had some help, but we could use more. We’re looking for help reffing games, scorekeeping, and taking photos. If you can hang around, please do, and give us a hand so we can provide the best experience possible for everyone.

With all of that out of the way, let’s look at the teams!

Demogorgons

Captain – Andrew Minerd
Skaters – Brian Gray, James Kopalchick, James Neely, Marley Ros, Adam Winemiller
Goalie – Felipe Rodriguez

Captain Minerd is still looking for his first win in the league, and with this team, he should be able to pull that off. This team has strengths in every area, but the spotlight is going to be on Brian Gray out of the gate. An unknown, Minerd took a gamble based on his facebook photo of another inline hockey team. That says he should at least know how to lace up his skates which puts him ahead of the pack in this league.

El Chupacabras

Captain – David Lopez
Skaters – Evan Cumpston, Justin Griffn, Peter Guevara, Dane Ortiz, John Smith
Goalie – Anthony Smith

Captain Lopez is counting on Cumpston to continue his dominance from last season and lead the Chupas to the promised land of a championship… or Tijuana. He’s happy with either. All the pressure rests on goalie Tony Smith. Last season, he outperformed expectations and has yet to come back to reality. If he can handle himself similarly this season, we might have to all consider him a real goalie.

Krakens

Captain – Nicholas McMahon
Skaters – Corey Calandra, Wayne Garrick, David Hastings, Chris Jimenez, Dan Ryan
Goalie – Chad Miller

Captain McMahon is new to the role, but no one’s going to go easy on hime. His first team looks to be defense heavy which is going to be interesting. Goalie Chad Miller has moments of brilliance when he has some good defense in front of him, and this team will certainly provide that. We’re expecting some relatively low-scoring games involving the Krakens.

Unicorns

Captain – Mike Mallery
Skaters – David Foss, Phil Heichel, Marc Redinger, Robert Robles, Brian van Vlymen
Goalie – Taylor Newton

Captain Mallery wants to repeat as champion, but more importantly, he wants to force Tony Smith to engrave “Unicorns” on the league trophy. This team has a lot of fire power up front, but may fall a little short on the back end. Taylor Newton is donning the pads for the season, and if he can compete as well as he did back at the church, there may be little need for a strong backend. All eyes will be on Robert Robles this season. After a brief appearance last season, we’re hoping attendance isn’t an issue this season.
