2020 Fall/Winter Season – New Teams

It’s been a long road, but we are officially back to playing some hockey!

There may be some rust as to how things roll here, so below you will find a quick recap of the rules for the games.

Rules

  • Standard hockey rules apply in all situations unless otherwise noted.
  • Gameplay will be 3v3.
  • Game time runs two 20-minute halves. Clock is always running so get line changes and line up for faceoffs quickly.
  • The clock will only stop for the following reasons:
    • Team timeout (one per team per game)
    • Player or ref injury
    • At every whistle during the last two minutes of the second half if the score differential is 2 or less. Clock will run if the scorekeeper deems it impossible for the team behind to tie the game (ie. down by 2, defensive zone faceoff, 4 seconds left).
    • Ref’s discretion
  • Games will start on time. If both teams are not ready, clock will run until teams are set. If one team is ready and the other can only field 2 skaters, game will start 3v2 and 3rd skater come join as soon as ready (does not need to wait for whistle).
  • Between period breaks are limited to 2 minutes max. Timeouts are limited to 1 minute.
  • Goalie timeouts are no longer available (unless equipment malfunction) as weather is cooling.
  • The scorekeeper is an official and can make a goal call when requested by on-ice officials. It is the responsibility of the scorekeeper to stop play and inform the refs of a goal if the scorekeeper definitively sees the puck cross the line and the ref(s) did not.
  • Standard penalties apply (tripping, hooking, cross checking, etc.). Penalties are served at the bench and, unless otherwise noted, are 2 minutes in length.
  • Single penalties will be played 3v2. Concurrent penalties will add fourth skater to power play team (4v2). If the first penalty expires, game will continue as 4v3 until the next whistle which will result in the game reverting to 3v2. If all penalties expire before a whistle, game will continue as 4v4 when players rejoin the game until a stoppage of play. Play will resume reverted back to 3v3.
  • Refs are volunteers and not professionals. Extended arguing with the refs can result in a 2-minute bench minor at the ref’s discretion.
  • Delay of Game Penalty: Similar to professional hockey, delay of game will be called for any puck shot out of play in the defensive half. On the open “bench” side, the ref or scorekeeper will determine if it would have cleared the fence if the fence enclosed the entire rink.
  • In the event of a tie at the end of regulation, play will resume as 2v2 for 3 minutes. Penalties will add players to the power play team rather than reduce below 2 skaters. Similar rules for penalties will be as listed above.
  • Penalties in overtime are 1 minute in length. If a penalty carries over from the 3rd period, the time to serve in overtime is either the remaining time or 1 minute, whichever is shorter.
  • If there is no winner at the end of overtime, we will go to a quick shootout.
    • If a light is out at one end, both goalies can opt to alternate in the same end.
    • Shootout is 3 rounds then single rounds if no winner is declared
    • Bench to the left of the scorekeeper shoots first
    • Skater can not touch the puck until the ref is in position at the goal line and blows the whistle. First infraction for the team will result in a redo. Second infraction for the team forfeits that shot.
    • No skater can take a second penalty shot until all skaters from his team have taken a shot. Same goes for third or fourth shots if it ever gets that far.
    • In the theme of keeping things rolling, shootout must begin as quickly as possible. At the end of overtime, every skater must leave the rink or line up along the boards and the first shooter needs to get to center as quickly as possible. We will allow a 1-minute break to get shootout lineups in order and goalies set.

We may amend some rules as we go, and we’ll be sure to let everyone know as soon as it happens.

Below are the new teams. Full schedule will be released soon.

Green Team

Color – Green
Captain – Robert Robles
Skaters – Matt Blackburn, Gary Burdge, Bryan Callahan, Micah Deary, Brian Gray, Augustus Vargas
Goalie – Ricky Dominguez

Captain Robert Robles may measure in at a whopping 4 feet tall, but he casts a long shadow (with some clever lighting). With his inaugural season as captain, we expect to see some growing pains. But with a lineup this stacked, there’s no ceiling for this team.

No… wait… we missed Blackburn. Blackburn is the ceiling for this team.

Red Team

Color – Red
Captain – Brian van Vlymen
Skaters – David Foss, David Lopez, Nicholas McMahon, Kelly Nolan, Jasen Rodriguez, Dan Ryan
Goalie – Andrew Minerd

Rookie goalie Andrew Minerd was all smiles when he found out he wouldn’t have to deal with rookie captain Brian van Vlymen this season. This team looks like it has a lot of egos, and it’ll be up to van Vlymen to be the voice of reason and calm his team down. If they can all get on the same page, this team should easily find its way into the playoffs.

Black Team

Color – Black
Captain – Jake Hernandez
Skaters – Evan Cumpston, Charles Gawell, Phil Heichel, Chris Read, Robert Rivera, Justin Tran
Goalie – Joel Estrada

Our third rookie captain, Jake Hernandez, had an interesting draft strategy. Or at least that’s what he told us. No one else has been able to figure it out, yet. A misfit team to be sure, a reliance on offensive power with minimal defensive prowess could see this team find itself in a lot of high-scoring games.

Riverwalk Hookers

Color – Yellow
Captain – Mike Mallery
Skaters – Greg Artzberger, Ryan Gilbert, Dbran Hastings, Corey Huffman, Chris Jimenez, Travis Laveault
Goalie – Taylor Newton

The only returning captain, Mike Mallery will be looking to add to his championship totals. But only because he’s the only captain who can claim that right now. This team is going to be the antithesis of the black team with a heavy emphasis on defense. Mallery said he will be leaning on goalie Taylor Newton to be the literal backbone of this team. Newton did not look pleased.
