The Church League – 2011 to 2016

The origins of hockey in the Alamo City era date back to the infamous “Church League” where players organized and played competitively in Southeast San Antonio. More photos can be found here. If you were involved in the SARHL from 2011-2014, please contact us at bgpcomm@gmail.com as we would like to learn more about the history of this era.

SARHL 1996-1999

From 1996-1999 the San Antonio Roller Hockey League operated here in the city across several different rinks with one being the Car-Vel Skating Rink on Bandera. Thank you to Joel Burkhard for sharing this piece of SARHL history with us.

Legends of the San Antonio Roller Hockey League

Mike Mallery

Michael “Mike” Mallery is a long time vet and original San Antonio hockey season. Responsible for the game write ups and scouting reports that kept you itching for hockey on Sunday nights. Outside of the website upkeep, Mallery participated as the offensive-defensive defenseman known for his uncanny ability to break up plays combined with absolute daggers of goals.

Tony Smith

The fore father of roller hockey at Fairchild Park. Anthony “Tony” Smith organized and ran the league after the leagued moved from the church rink to it’s current location. On the rink, Tony transitioned from the grizzly, stay-at-home defender to the role between the pipes, playing goalie for multiple SARHL seasons.

Wayne Garrick

The SARHL’s first Canadian to play in the league. Wayne operated as the league enforcer and 4th line hero during his several stints in the league. Recording over 232 points in just 18 games and finding little to enforce here in the southern-charmed city of San Antonio; Wayne retired back to Canada to continue his career in the Mantitoba Senior Pond Hockey league.

Marc Redinger

From the Church League era to the courts of Fairchild Park, Marc Redinger dominated the SA Roller hockey scene with his red-line clappers and tricky backhand snipes. Originally from Chicago, Redinger brought a mid-west style that not many Texans could handle. Redinger led multiple teams, including the Unicorns and Golden Seals, to championship titles during his time in Texas. He now resides in the back country of Tennessee tearing up the Chattanooga Roller League.

Chad Miller

Chad Miller earned his selection from the dedication he displayed to the league both off and on the rink. Chad holds the records for most consecutive minutes as an SARHL keeper (as well as the most goals allowed). Not much is known about Miller’s life other than his previous work history as a touring Ringling Bros. Circus clown.

Phil Heichel

One of the most prolific scorers in the SARHL’s history, Phil Heichel introduced the south to how Michigan plays hockey. The famed home dresser was known for appearing just 30 seconds before game-time, flying in from the parking lot on skates with helmet on, straight to the face-off dot for a quick drop on the way to net one home within the first minute. Heichel’s career as a doctor or surgeon or something like that carried him away from San Antonio, relieving all goalies in the league.
