Week 1 Recap

Southside Sicarios vs. Dignowity Gentrification

The season’s first game kicked off with all the pageantry of a blockbuster premiere—except without any of the actual execution to back it up. The Southside Sicarios wasted no time asserting their dominance, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back, cruising to a 7-4 win over the Dignowity Gentrification.

Final Score:

Southside Sicarios 7, Dignowity Gentrification 4

Goal Scorers:

🟦 Dignowity Gentrification:

  • Micah Deary (x2) – Subbing in for Kaleb Morley, but might have reconsidered if he knew what he was stepping into
  • Andrew Minerd (x1) – The fearless leader does the least he could do – literally
  • Matt Gilbert (x1) – Sniped one despite an otherwise forgetful debut

🟥 Southside Sicarios:

  • Collin Iacarella (x4) – Padding the stat sheet and attempting unnecessary flair
  • Jaiden Hernandez (x2) – Given two(!) charity goals to avoid another 0-57 horror story start of a season
  • Adam Dixon (x1) – Wasn’t the worst player out there

Game Notes:

Mallery Takes Full Responsibility… Unfortunately
In what may be a new league record for worst positional awareness, Mike Mallery proudly shouldered the blame for the loss, admitting that he was in the offensive zone for 8 of the 7 Sicarios goals. While some may call that mathematically impossible, those who watched the game know it’s simply Mallery in peak form.

Collin’s Endgame Embellishment
Collin Iacarella, known for his goal-scoring prowess, tried to add some flair to round out the game, pulling off a between-the-legs shot in the final seconds—except, in true SARHL fashion, it had absolutely no power, no purpose, and no reason to exist. It’s unclear whether this was an actual attempt at showmanship or just a very awkward accident, but either way, it left his captain, Jaiden Hernandez, shaking his head and wondering when the mandatory team downgrade is coming.

Jaiden Scores Early… With Help
Jaiden Hernandez, infamous for his brutal 0-57 start last season, had “the league” “step in” to “ensure” “history” didn’t “repeat itself”. He scored two goals all by himself in what could only be described as “hockey charity work,” Jaiden can at least say he’s got that all important first win early this season. Whether he builds on this or makes the smart play and intentionally tanks the rest of the season so his team doesn’t get downgraded…

Final Thoughts:

The Southside Sicarios looked strong in their debut, but there are already some early warning signs—Dixon already shot his load and Jaiden can only hold off the cold streak for so long. Meanwhile, the Dignowity Gentrification will have to rethink their defensive strategy (or just implement one in general) before their next game.

One game down, and the SARHL is already in midseason form.

Waste Management vs. Legendary Stoners

If you enjoy low-scoring, uneventful hockey, then congratulations—you missed an absolute gem in the late game. The Legendary Stoners somehow pulled off an improbable 3-2 win over Waste Management, improbable not because of any thrilling heroics but because we rarely see SARHL games this boring.

Final Score:

Legendary Stoners 3, Waste Management 2

Goal Scorers:

🌿 Legendary Stoners:

  • Zack Merullo (x2) – No need to confirm, we already counted his assists (yes, we’re going to run that one incident into the ground)
  • Ryan Lewis (x1) – Probably an accidental deflection, but we’ll give him credit

♻️ Waste Management:

  • Alex Casella (x1) – Snuck one in before the game lulled everyone to sleep
  • Jacob Hernandez (x1) – Put himself on the board, but couldn’t will his team to a win. Remember, every time Jake scores, that’s free cupcakes next week!

Game Notes:

Coach Penn and the Buffalo Bills
The biggest headline of the night was the absence of Waste Management captain, Coach Penn, who reportedly missed the game in the same way the Bills missed the Super Bowl—agonizing, heartbreaking, and way too familiar. Without their coach, Waste Management played like garbage. They kept things close, but the lack of leadership on the bench was evident.

Junior’s Draft-Day Regret
Junior, usually a force in the first period, was held to a single assist. When asked about his shockingly quiet night, he simply said, “I’m going to complain to whoever drafted this team.” We’re letting him figure that one out for himself.

Zack Merullo Has the Receipts
The post-game atmosphere was oddly peaceful, thanks to Zack Merullo not having to hunt down the scorekeeper to verify his assists. Everyone in the league already knew the outcome—he got them all. If the final stats had said “Zack, 2 goals, 5 assists” in a 3-2 game, nobody would have even questioned it.

Final Thoughts:

While this game won’t be making any SARHL highlight reels (or even staying in anyone’s memory past tomorrow), the Legendary Stoners secured a win in their season opener, and Waste Management will be hoping their captain shows up next week.

With Week 1 in the books, the league already has its trends:

  • The Sicarios look dangerous.
  • Dignowity Gentrification needs to find their defense (or just stop letting Mallery roam free).
  • The Stoners somehow won a game that looked like a soccer score.
  • Waste Management already stinks, and their best player might be their absent captain.

Onward to Week 2, where hopefully someone remembers to score more goals!
