BIG SMASHER DROPS BOTH GAMES ON OPENING NIGHT
Projected title favorites begin season 0-2 as Sauced Mozz and Titos Punch capitalize at Fairchild Park.
SAN ANTONIO — The Spring SARHL season officially opened Sunday evening at the (Un)Official Rink at Fairchild Park, where attendance was reported at six spectators for Game 1. League officials later clarified those six spectators were simply players hoping to be picked up as substitutes.
By the end of the evening, the preseason-favored Big Smasher found itself winless after dropping decisions to both Sauced Mozz and Titos Punch in a pair of games that featured offensive surges, questionable line changes, and two separate Too Many Men penalties — an infraction so rare in the SARHL that some players were forced to consult the rulebook afterward. FAIRCHILD PARK — The Spring SARHL season opened Sunday evening before an announced crowd of six spectators. Independent auditors later determined that number included three players hoping to be picked up as substitutes, one bike polo player waiting for a ride home, and a man walking his dog who never once looked toward the rink.
Still, it counted.
The season opener began with the debut of the league’s rotating goaltender experiment, as Taylor Newton suited up for Sauced Mozz while Felipe Rodriguez guarded the net for Big Smasher.
The pace of the opening period was described by multiple participants as “fast.” Independent observers later clarified that everyone was skating at exactly medium speed.
Big Smasher struck first when Nathan Motz finished a feed from Brandon Popham midway through the opening period. Popham has stated that he is repeating as scoring leader for the league in a tone that was said to be more defiant overcompensation than authoritative. Regardless, the early lead was short-lived.
Returning winger Zack Merullo immediately reminded everyone he assisted on Alex Casella’s equalizer. Witnesses reported Merullo continued discussing the assist for much of the evening despite recording no additional points. They went on to say that Merullo was heard telling anyone who would listen about all of the assists he should have had in this game.
Sauced Mozz quietly controlled the game from there as Andrew Minerd scored his first goal of the season to give Sauced Mozz a lead they would never fully relinquish.
The teams exchanged goals and momentum throughout the second period before an unlikely partnership between Matt Gilbert and Alex Casella began creating problems for Big Smasher’s defense. Gilbert and Casella factored into three consecutive Sauced Mozz goals, turning a tight contest into a comfortable lead. Reports from the Sauced Mozz bench suggested that the other players were getting uncomfortable with the longing stares into each others’ eyes by Gilbert and Casella.
Big Smasher’s frustrations only mounted when Nathan Motz was assessed a Too Many Men penalty late in the frame.
The official explanation remains unclear.
Reports indicate one player entered the surface, exited the surface, and was immediately replaced by another player entering the surface. After several moments of confusion, Motz was identified as the responsible party despite appearing only mildly involved. Motz’ fantasy numbers continue to pay dividends.
Big Smasher managed one final push in the third behind David Narvaiz, but Sauced Mozz answered repeatedly.
Andrew Minerd sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final seconds. Several players argued a high-stick should have been called moments earlier, and they were correct, but officials admitted they simply assumed nobody would continue trying that late in the game that was all but done.
Afterward, Minerd credited his teammates for the victory while quietly enjoying the rare experience of captaining a team without simultaneously having to babysit Mike Mallery and Brandon Popham.
Sources close to the captain described the feeling as “liberating.”

FAIRCHILD PARK — By the start of Game 2, attendance had risen to eight spectators, largely consisting of players from Sauced Mozz who elected to remain at the rink. By the final horn, attendance had dwindled to two individuals who may or may not have been engaged in a dispute over a half eaten sandwich near the cemetery beyond the far boards.
Despite the shrinking crowd, Titos Punch delivered one of the night’s biggest surprises, holding off a furious Big Smasher comeback to secure a 6-5 victory and leave the preseason favorites winless on opening night.
With no additional goalies available, Taylor Newton and Felipe Rodriguez simply switched benches between games. Neither appeared particularly enthusiastic about the arrangement, but with both goalies inexplicably wearing white, no one really seemed to notice.
Titos Punch entered the contest without David “Coach” Penn, who spent the evening keeping score while citing a shortage of elbow grease as the reason for his absence. League officials declined to comment on the diagnosis.
The game began in disastrous fashion for Big Smasher.
Brian Van Vlymen, fresh off promising dramatically improved attendance this season, opened the scoring just sixty seconds into the contest while portions of the Big Smasher roster were still completing what could generously be described as warm-ups.
Jaiden Hernandez followed moments later, scoring his first goal of the new season after reportedly ending a prolonged hunger strike brought on by an empty cheese ball container. Shortly after scoring, Hernandez returned to the bench complaining of turf toe after being stripped of the puck by a Big Smasher defender.
Despite the discomfort, Hernandez remained active throughout the game, occasionally playing hockey between medical updates.
Then Junior Yupanqui finally arrived.
Though technically present during Game 1, witnesses confirmed the Big Smasher captain fully entered the building sometime during the second period of Game 2.
Yupanqui immediately sparked a comeback, scoring three goals while repeatedly dragging Big Smasher back into contention. Nathan Motz in full “Junior Protégé Mode,” joined the effort with two goals of his own as the duo accounted for all five Big Smasher tallies.
Each time Big Smasher fought back, however, Titos Punch found an answer.
Jacob Hernandez restored a two-goal lead early in the second period before Yupanqui answered with back-to-back goals to tie the game at four.
Then came the moment that nearly ended the evening.
At 9:24 of the second period, Brian Van Vlymen delivered a pass to Mike Mallery near the front of the net. Mallery converted.
The goal itself only made the score 5-4.
The emotional damage was significantly greater.
Several Big Smasher players immediately stared toward their bench following the goal, apparently searching for guidance. None was provided.
League records remain inconclusive, but historians estimate that teams allowing goals to Mallery recover psychologically less than one percent of the time. Debilitating shame is the most often cited issue.
Big Smasher briefly tied the game at five early in the third on a power-play goal by Motz after Van Vlymen was penalized for a Too Many Men violation. Officials reported Van Vlymen re-entered the playing surface specifically to retrieve a dropped stick near center ice. His team tried to call him back, but he refused to listen.
The deadlock lasted only a few minutes.
With just under three minutes remaining, Jacob Hernandez struck again, completing his hat trick and giving Titos Punch the lead for good.
As the final seconds ticked away, Big Smasher’s hopes of salvaging opening night disappeared.

Meanwhile, Titos Punch improved to 1-0 and immediately made every preseason prediction look questionable.
