Week 5 – Winter ’23

Game 1: Tacos vs Dignowity – Another pristine weather night at the beautiful Fairchild Park greeted the SARHL for Week 4 games. After the first cycle (all teams have played 1 double header), this starts the second cycle before playoffs where every team will play another double header. After 4 games a piece, the league standings were all locked up with each team winning two and losing two.

The first game of the night featured Dignowity versus the Tacos, the week one rematch that Dignowity has had circled on the calendar. Both Burdge and Iacarella were in attendance for Dignowity this week and boy did that make a difference. The first shift of the game saw Dignowity open a 3-0 lead scoring on every shot taken on goals from Iacarella and Burdge.

From there the game would be more lopsided than a Weather balloon versus a couple F-16 Fighter Jets. The Dignowity players would tally on 5 more goals in the second period to extend the lead to 8-0.

The third period was no different as Dignowity added one more to push the score up to 9-0. Keeper Taylor Newton was in between the pipes and put on a Goaltending clinic turning away all 20+ shots taken by the offense of the Tacos. Even with Van Vlyman making his first appearance of the season for the Tacos, the offense of BVV-Penn-Jimenez found no answers to the Welshmans effort. It was not until 1 minute left to play that Doho Burdge was heard saying “shutout” as the Taco’s sniper, Jake Hernadez, walked in to break the ice for the Tacos and make the game 9-1.

Game 2: Tacos vs El Pollo – The Tacos would be on the double header and after an early iguanas practice, were running low on gas in the tank. Luckily, 3 of their teammates showed up for this game but not the first one to give some added support. Skating 7 a team, the first period would see a see-saw of a match as the two teams traded goals to end the first at 3-3.

In the second period, Minerd and Dreary would connect on a tictactoe passing play ending with a backhand goal to open up the game 4-3, El Pollo. Late in the second period, Brian Van Vlyman finally wiped away his “my 49ers are out of the playoffs” tears and found the back of the net to tie the game. Shortly after, Van Vlyman found Vargas on the backdoor for an easy tap in goal that gave the Tacos their first lead of the game.

El Pollo made a third period push after substitute and airplane captain Chuck Gawell would put a puck past the Taco’s goaltender, Ricky. The period would progress at 5-4 with the Tacos leading until Brian Van Vlyman added two more alongside one from Jimenez to give the Tacos the 8-4 win.

Week 3 Results

Game 1: The first game of the night featured the Tacos versus El Pollo, with the latter playing the double header. Coming into week 3, El Pollo sat at the top of the leader board with 2 wins and 0 losses. The weather was absolutely pristine at Fairchild park with a high of 70 to start the night. In the first period we would not see much scoring as both goaltenders came dialed in. Newton was between the pipes for El Pollo after an all day iron man in Denton while Ricky played keep for the Tacos, still recovering from a huge Rollerdads Ice Hockey win on Friday night.

The second period would open up the game as the duo of Jiminez and Hernadez would connect on three goals for the Tacos.

The third period saw El Pollo attempt to close the 3 goal gap with goals from Minerd and Yupanqui, but the offense of the Tacos was able to counter and hold off the surging chicken to secure the win.

Game 2: El Pollo was on the double header and squared up against Dignowity in the second game of the night. The weather had began to deteriorate with a cold breeze snapping the pristine, tropical conditions. The skaters of El Pollo were extremely gassed from the first battle and requested backup from game 1s goal scorer, Jiminez. This game was lively from the start with goals being traded 1 for 1 to end the first in a 3-3 tie.

The second period would open up with a one-man effort from Dignowity by Iacarella to add on two goals and assist on another extending the Dignowity led to three.

In the third period, after a questionable call from the official who might not have even been watching the game, El Pollo would attempt a first ever strategy in SARHL history. While on the PP, El Pollo would pull their goalie with 10 minutes of game left, to obtain a 5 to 3 skater advantage for the 2 minute penalty. In theory and on the white boards of the Dallas Cowboys lockerroom, this pay would work great, however in real life Dignowity would obtain a loose puck in the corner and breakout, putting the puck in the empty net for the shorthanded goal. Dignowity would add on one more late in the third to seal the 8-6 victory.

Game 1: Dignowity vs El Pollo – The Dignowity Meats had captain-player-owner-coach Gary Burdge return from his offseason celebrations this week as they squared up against El Pollo in the first of two SARHL games for the night. Dignowity could not handle the potent offense of El Pollo.

Winter ’23: Week 1 Scores & Week 2 Game Times

Week 1: Results

Game 1 – Taco vs Dignowity

The Winter ’23 season kicked off with a matchup between the Tacos and the defending champs, Dignowity. The weather was near perfect with a slight breeze and after the national anthem, the two teams placed 3 a side on the rink and the season was underway. The Tacos, led by Coach Penn known formerly the Southtown Canadians, are looking for redemption this year after earning the title of last place in the prior season. The game would kick off with a trio of goals by the Tacos to take a 3-0 lead after the first period. Dignowity had troubles getting into their grove with absences from Doho Burdge and Colin Iacarella, who both appear to still be in Disney World post winning the SARHL Fall Championship. Late in the second, Dignowity would find the board for the first team and cut the lead to 4-1. In the 3rd, the Tacos closed out the game by scoring three more while only conceding one to finish the game 7-2.

Game 2 – Taco vs El Pollo

The second game of the night featured the Tacos on the double header versus El Pollo, captained by Andy Minerd and formerly the Broadway Bruins. The first period would see goals from both sides as El Pollo took an early 2-1 lead after the first period. The tired legs of the Tacos would start to show in the second period as El Pollo worked the puck around to extend their led to 5-2. In the offseason, El Pollo put in the work, attending Wednesday sessions with daily cardio and yoga mixed in alongside 1,000 toedrags every morning. The Tacos would put in an early goal to cut the led to 5-3 in the third, but the comeback stopped there as the defense from Callahan, Minerd and Ricky between pipes locked it down to hold the Tacos scoreless for the remaining 10 minutes. A late goal from the newly drafted, Micah Dreay, gave El Pollo the cherry on top to seal the deal and take home their first win of the season, 6-3.
