Week 6 Scores

Week 6 Results – 11/13

Week 6 Game 1: Stars blank Canadians with 5-0 win

The Stars played it close this week with attendance but were able to find three team members by start time. Brian Van Vlyman led the offensive charge for the Stars while Greg Artzberger locked down the defensive front. The Canadians would never have a chance in this one as goal keeper Felipe had the answer for every shot attempt taken. The contest would end 5-0, securing the shutout for Felipe, only the second shutout of the season, and push the Stars into third place with the Canadians falling back to fourth.

Week 6 Game 2: Devils take back first place with 5-1 win over the Bruins

The game of the night featured our first and second place teams, the Devils and Bruins. This was a highly anticpated rematch as Devils captain, Gary Burdge, was absent for the first meeting of the two. The scoring in the first and second would all be from the Devils side as the duo of Dr. Gary B and Dr. Gary B would combine for 4 goals. The Bruins would attempt a third period push, putting one goal on the board, only to be answered by a Devils goal just 30 seconds later. The game would end 5-1 as the Devils reclaimed the top spot in the league.

Week 4 Scores and Standings

Results from Week 4 – 10/23

Week 4 Results – 10/23

Week 4 – Game 1: Canadians outscored in last period, Devils comeback to win 6-4

The first matchup of these two saw the Devils win 11-0 over the Canadians. This time around the Canadians were able to rally to a first period lead after a pair of goals from Callahan opened up a 2-0 game. In the second period, the Canadians would extend their lead to 4-1 with goals added from Coach Penn. This would be the last we see the Canadians end up on the score sheet. The second half of period two and period three saw the Devils rally behind Captain Gary Burdge, who posted 4 goals, to take back a 5-4 lead. The game would end on an empty netter scored by Hernandez to seal the deal for the Devils win, which places them 3-1 for the second seed heading into the bye week. The Canadians fall to 0-4 on the season and will be looking to reorganize for the second half of the season.

Week 4 – Game 2: Bruins cruise to another victory, winning 8-2 over the Stars

The second game of the night was over as quickly as it started. Even with Van Vlyman in attendance for the Stars, the number one seeded Bruins went to work early and did not let up until the final buzzer rang out. The trio of Minerd-Yupanqui-Johnson combined for 6 of the 8 goals on the night, posting multiple odd-man-rush tic-tac-toe style goals. The defense of the Stars was unable to find any answer for the high powered offense of the Bruins. This win extended the Bruins to 4-0 on the season, holding on to the top spot going into the Halloween break.

Player Profiles

This week’s Player Profiles feature three skaters that have been in the league for a while. From Church Leagues to Fairchild, through the hot summer seasons and the pickup nights, these three are dedicated to hockey in San Antonio. First up is David Foss, a Canadian who has made the Alamo City his home where he contributes to the community as a high school english teacher at one of the local schools while playing hockey for the SARHL and Rollerdads. D-LO, better known as Captain David Lopez, has been the heart and soul of the SARHL/Iguana hockey teams who’s career starts back in the church leagues of San Antonio hockey. You will find David catching the action on video for the Instagram, attending local community meetings and organizing jersey purchases for the league. Last up this week is JR Yupanqui, a long time SARHL player who originally hails from NYC-New Jersey area, while growing up here in San Antonio and El Paso. JR posts an 100% attendance rate at pick up hockey and can be found behind the scoreboard for games he is not playing in.

Week 3 Scores and Standings

Results from 10/16 – Standings through 3 weeks of play

Week 3 Results – 10/16

Week 3 – Game 1: Stars snag first win of season in 7-5 game over the Canadians

The return of Brian Van Vlyman for the Eastside Stars proved to be the difference maker in this game. After the Canadians started hot with a 4 goal first period led by Jiminez, Ortega and Munoz, the Stars responded with 5 unanswered goals across the first and second. Van Vlyman brought out the toolbox scoring with the forehand, backhand and even bouncing one off a defenders skate. The third period saw the Canadians get within a 1 goal difference but the late period push was not enough as the Stars held on to win 7-5.

Week 3 – Game 2: Bruins secure top ranks in the league with a 5-3 victory.

The second game of the night featuring the Bruins and Devils, both teams entering the week with 2 wins and 0 losses. The Bruins would be the first on the spreadsheet with the only goal in the first period being scored by JR Yupanqui. The second period would see more scoring as both teams slide 2 a piece past the keepers. The third period started with a Devils goal to notch the game at 3-3 before the Bruins notched 2 late period goals to seal the win with a 5-3 victory.

Player Profiles

This weeks player profiles cover the Captains of SARHL Fall Season: Brian (Stars), Andrew (Bruins), Brandon “Coach Penn” (Canadians), and the “DOHO” Gary (Devils).

Of the 4, Captain Andy is the longest tenured SARHL player of the group and is most famous for the building of the Scoreboard you see each week. Originally from New Hampshire, Andy relocated to San Antonio over a decade ago and now raises his three sons alongside his wife here in the Alamo city. Brian VV, a transplant from California and now San Antonio resident, teaches us that while we may all use different languages – the language of hockey is universal and more than just a game but rather an activity that brings us closer together as peers, teammates, rivals and community members. Brian spent several years competing for the USA National Ice Deaf Hockey team and routinely travels back to California for tournaments alongside the Deaf Hockey Club.

Our last two captains, Brandon and Gary moved to San Antonio in the winter and summer of 2019 respectively, both hailing from the northeast states of New York and New Jersey. Around the league, Gary is known as the “DOHO” or Director of Hockey Operations and is responsible for the management of the SARHL Sunday play and Iguanas travel team. Under his player-coach-owner leadership, the Iguanas have competed throughout Texas from McAllen to Houston to Dallas and organized the first out-of-state tourney for the Iguanas when the team competed in State Wars 17 in St. Louis, Missouri. “Coach Penn” earned his nickname from his time in Tampa, FL where he coached the youth programs for the Tampa Roller Rink, securing a 2017 National Championship win with the 2008 Tampa Thunder 8u team. He provides backend support for the SARHL website, community support and financial operations.
