Game Previews

03/08/2020 – Week 7 Preview

We are in uncharted territory as week 7 is upon us. Through 6 weeks, we’ve seen mostly even games with an outlier here and there. Though the Bounty Hunters are leading the pack, they rarely win by more than 1 and even suffered their first loss to the last place Jar Jars last week. As much as we’ve discussed trades, it looks like there might not be a need for this season. Everyone is safe from being traded to the Tusken Raiders… for now.

The opening matchup will feature two teams coming off of big wins last week. Big meaning different things to both teams, though. Regardless, we should see an interesting matchup which, as evidence suggests, may see these two teams meeting in round 1 of the playoffs.

The Jar Jars earned the first victory over the Bounty Hunters last week. A second period collapse almost gave the game to the Hunters, but the JJs held on

This week, they’ll be looking to build on that momentum. Not knowing who’s in net will certainly play into the mind games as we could see Adam Winemiller, Anthony Smith, or the new confident Anthony Smith. Sporting three goalies keeps things fresh for this team. Look for captain David Penn to try to spark back-to-back wins for the first time this season. “We’ve got a great team,” Penn said. “When I’m here.”

The R2D2s big game came by the way of a 14-5 whooping of the Tusken Raiders. No excuses will be made, but Gary Burdge’s 37:26 of ice time was duly noted.

The R2s should have a longer bench this week which will keep Burdge a little more limited. Captain Andrew Minerd may just continue to payy off some of his teammates to keep them out of action if it continues to lead to such heavy victories. “Whatever it takes,” Minerd was heard mumbling. “I want that f—–g trophy.”

The second game features two teams looking to erase the memories of last week. That may be easier said than done for one of these two, those.

After an embarassing loss last week, the Tusken Raiders have a lot to play for this week. Unsure who is going to show up isn’t going to make things any easier, though.

If the entire team shows up, expect the Raiders to push the Hunters to the limit. The Raiders have all the pieces to pace the Hunters atop the standings, but attendance woes and a high draft pick no-show has been hurting this team since game one. “(Chris) Read’s not playing this week,” noted Raiders’ captain Mike Mallery. “Smart move. Anytime I’m out there, he just racks up the penalty minutes while I rack up the bruises.”

The Bounty Hunters are looking to avoid back-to-back losses as this is not the time of year to start picking up those “L”s. Without forward Chris Read, the Hunters are going to look to rookie Ryan Rose to both goon it up a little and be the heart of the team.

Hunters’ captain Nicholas McMahon always has a trick up his sleeve, and we expect more of the same this week. Being down goalie Taylor Newton and Read, we heard he has calls out to former NHL goalie Ed Belfour and former NHL enforcer Claude Lemieux. “It’s completely fair,” stated McMahon. “They’re old, so it’s not like they’ll be in their primes.”

Week 2 Preview

Week 2 is upon us, and with it, the Stray Cats’ first doubleheader of the season. The Cats will have their endurance tested as they host both the Tarantulas and River Sharks. We’ll get a good idea of who’s ready to set the pace for the season and who might be in for a rude awakening.

Game 1: Tarantulas vs. Stray Cats
Two undefeated teams go head-to-head to kick off the night, and one of them is leaving with their first loss. After a strong win last week, the Tarantulas will look to keep their offense rolling. Captain Penn’s leadership is in question, as whispers in the locker room claim he can’t even pronounce “tarantula” without a stutter—expect the opposing Stray Cats to exploit that mental weakness at every opportunity. Collin Iacarella will aim to keep his hot streak alive, and we’ll see if Kaleb Morley can keep up his scoring pace, or if last week was just a flash in the pan.

The Stray Cats come into this game riding high after their win over the Sharks. Captain Andrew Minerd and his team will need to dig deep to take down the Tarantulas before facing another battle later in the evening. They’ll be leaning on the unstoppable force that is Micah Deary, who is said to be fueled by pure disdain for referees and lactose. Goalie Taylor Newton will be looking to shake off his new “20-second drop” technique and prove he’s got what it takes to keep his team on top.

Special Note: Keep an eye on Rick Odom—every time Penn scores, Odom’s grin widens. By the third goal, he may just levitate.

Game 2: River Sharks vs. Stray Cats
After their earlier matchup, the Stray Cats get to dust themselves off and jump right back into the fray against the River Sharks, who are hungry for a win after dropping both games last week. This will be a test of stamina, skill, and just how much trash talk one team can dish out in two games.

Captain Jaiden Hernandez and his Sharks will be looking to make up for their slow start to the season, and rumor has it he’s threatened to confiscate all post-game beverages if the team doesn’t deliver. Felipe Rodriguez will be in net again, ready to pull off some acrobatic saves—and maybe a few dance moves—to keep his team in the game. Junior, after lighting it up last week, has been whispering to teammates about a new goal celebration that involves a kazoo. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, the Stray Cats will need to find some fuel for the second leg of their doubleheader. Andrew Minerd may need to dig deep into his book of motivational speeches, though most of them just involve shouting “Do it for the trophy!” with a voice crack. Expect Mallery to keep bringing his offensive A-game, and don’t be surprised if DeGroff rolls up in a new set of gear borrowed entirely from other players for the second game.

All in all, Week 2 is shaping up to be a wild one, and by the end of it, we’ll have a much clearer picture of who’s going to make their mark early in the season. Strap in and grab your tree trading cards—this week’s gonna be fun.
