Week 4 Games
Sunday Night – 10/23

Week 3 Scores and Standings
Results from 10/16 – Standings through 3 weeks of play

Week 3 – Game 1: Stars snag first win of season in 7-5 game over the Canadians
The return of Brian Van Vlyman for the Eastside Stars proved to be the difference maker in this game. After the Canadians started hot with a 4 goal first period led by Jiminez, Ortega and Munoz, the Stars responded with 5 unanswered goals across the first and second. Van Vlyman brought out the toolbox scoring with the forehand, backhand and even bouncing one off a defenders skate. The third period saw the Canadians get within a 1 goal difference but the late period push was not enough as the Stars held on to win 7-5.
Week 3 – Game 2: Bruins secure top ranks in the league with a 5-3 victory.
The second game of the night featuring the Bruins and Devils, both teams entering the week with 2 wins and 0 losses. The Bruins would be the first on the spreadsheet with the only goal in the first period being scored by JR Yupanqui. The second period would see more scoring as both teams slide 2 a piece past the keepers. The third period started with a Devils goal to notch the game at 3-3 before the Bruins notched 2 late period goals to seal the win with a 5-3 victory.
Player Profiles
This weeks player profiles cover the Captains of SARHL Fall Season: Brian (Stars), Andrew (Bruins), Brandon “Coach Penn” (Canadians), and the “DOHO” Gary (Devils).
Of the 4, Captain Andy is the longest tenured SARHL player of the group and is most famous for the building of the Scoreboard you see each week. Originally from New Hampshire, Andy relocated to San Antonio over a decade ago and now raises his three sons alongside his wife here in the Alamo city. Brian VV, a transplant from California and now San Antonio resident, teaches us that while we may all use different languages – the language of hockey is universal and more than just a game but rather an activity that brings us closer together as peers, teammates, rivals and community members. Brian spent several years competing for the USA National Ice Deaf Hockey team and routinely travels back to California for tournaments alongside the Deaf Hockey Club.
Our last two captains, Brandon and Gary moved to San Antonio in the winter and summer of 2019 respectively, both hailing from the northeast states of New York and New Jersey. Around the league, Gary is known as the “DOHO” or Director of Hockey Operations and is responsible for the management of the SARHL Sunday play and Iguanas travel team. Under his player-coach-owner leadership, the Iguanas have competed throughout Texas from McAllen to Houston to Dallas and organized the first out-of-state tourney for the Iguanas when the team competed in State Wars 17 in St. Louis, Missouri. “Coach Penn” earned his nickname from his time in Tampa, FL where he coached the youth programs for the Tampa Roller Rink, securing a 2017 National Championship win with the 2008 Tampa Thunder 8u team. He provides backend support for the SARHL website, community support and financial operations.
